A Guide to Sunglasses – What Matters and What Doesn’t

When the weather turns warm, our thoughts turn to vacation and some fun in the sun. We see things in stores like bathing suits, beach towels, sandals, and sunglasses. If you are looking for a new pair of sunglasses, then there are four things that matter and four things that don’t really matter.

4 Things That Make a Difference

When you are buying your sunglasses, these are the four things that you really want to concentrate on in order to choose the right ones.

  • The Numbers Make a Difference – When you are shopping for your sunglasses, search for the labels which say that the lenses will block 99-100% of the UV radiation. They also should block out the UVB as well as UVA rays.
  • The Fit Will Make a Difference – Sunglasses that are poorly fitted may not give you ample protection. If they feel uncomfortable or awkward, you won’t be as likely to wear them. When they’re too big or too small, the light may be coming in from their sides. A great choice is choosing the wraparound sunglasses as the athletes wear.
  • The Lenses Make a Difference – Lenses that are polarized will deflect the glare but not protect your eyes from the UV rays. Lenses that are made of glass don’t give you a lot of protection. It’s a better choice to buy plastic lenses that are made of polycarbonate. These lenses are tough and give you enough protection from UV rays. They’re also much sturdier when compared to other types. Another good choice are photochromic lenses, since they block both UV radiation and glare while helping you see sharply.
  • They Need to be Functional – There are some options for people who have trouble wearing sunglasses. If you already wear glasses, you can try getting prescription sunglasses. Tinting also is an option, or you can clip lenses onto your glasses.

4 Things that Don’t Really Make a Difference

These following things don’t really matter a lot when you are shopping for sunglasses.

  • Age – Children have eyes that are even more sensitive to the UV light due to their clearer lenses and corneas. However, when you are at the beach or pool, chances are that you are noticing a lot of adults who are wearing sunglasses while the kids usually aren’t. there are a lot of fun styles that are available for children. However, make sure that you’re choosing lenses that block 99-100% of the UV rays.
  • Season – Even though most people think about sunglasses as something that’s just needed in the summertime, this is false. You need to protect your eyes throughout the year because the sun shines through the year. Even though you may not see the sun as much during autumn and winter, it’s still there and it still can damage your eyes. Beach sand, snow and seafoam all reflect the UV light that damages your eyes and the snow in the winter will reflect more of the UV light when compared with dry sand.
  • Lens color – Generally, the lenses’ colors aren’t going to make any difference in the way that the sunglasses protect your eyes. Sunglasses that have really dark lenses are often worn by celebrities who are trying to not be noticed. However, they aren’t going to give you any additional protection from the sun. protections that have lenses that are amber in color and block blue light aren’t going to defend your eyes against UV rays adequately.
  • Cost – You know those $500 designer sunglasses that you saw in the store? Chances are that the $10 ones are going to protect your eyes just as well. You don’t have to spend a lot of money on the sunglasses to get the protection that your eyes need. All you have to do is look for the ones that block 99-100% of the UV rays.

Go out and find yourself a pair of sunglasses. Remember to choose a pair that will fit you well, that will block the UV rays and protect your eyes, that function well and that have the right types of lenses.

Keep in mind that anytime the sun is out, even part way, it can damage your eyes and you should have your sunglasses on. You don’t have to spend a lot of money to buy sunglasses. Just make sure that they will block the rays.
